Poker in Bad Weather

The old way of playing poker may bore some payer that they decide to try some new rules or twist the old ones they have been playing for ages. Some inventors of these poker variations have given them funny names such as shotgun, double-barrel and butcher boy. Some owe their names from certain places as Tennessee poker and Cincinnati poker. Still others have strange names not duly accounted for.

Stormy Weather poker might have been made up when there was a storm passing through the inventor's territory. Such variation of the draw poker is formed under the influence of Spit in the Ocean. Out of the spit the ocean poker came Wild Window and Stormy Weather. Others would say it is from widow poker games and that it is usually played in home games. Sorry, there is hardly any reference to this game other than how it is simply played.

In this game, players are handed four cards, dealt singly and of course face down. When the dealer gets his second card, that is when he lays a face up card on the table. Another card is placed on the table when he or she gets the third card. Same with the fourth card: another card is laid down. The fourth card is the last of the deal and there are three closed community cards on the table.

And because it is derived from draw poker, its betting and drawing of cards are somewhat the same. The exception is that player can uncover pot with any hand he desires and not necessarily with a hand composed of a pair of jacks or better. The drawing of cards is not limited to three cards at most as a player can draw up to four if they desire.

If the pot has been opened and active players have completed their draw, there will be no betting instead the dealer turns up the first card dealt to the table and a round of betting ensues. At the end of this betting round, another card is turned up and another betting round happens. This pattern goes until the third and final community card is revealed.

On showdown, play is given permission to use any of the three community cards as the fifth card to complete one's hand. Player must verbally indicate on their proper turn which of the community cards one will be using. A player may rectify no mistakes after their turn has passed.

And that's about it. Next time you're bored of regular poker why not try this fun variation and see if it's Stormy Weather at your poker table.
